Hemispheres 7

Robert Zielinski Trio, Billie Rogers

Friday 25 August 2017
After a short break we’re back with our sixth concert in the Hemispheres | Music of the World series at PS Art Space featuring formidable Irish fiddler and instrument maker, Robert Zielinski, playing in a trio with Fiona Doyle, wooden flute, whistle & vocals and Phil Waldron, double bass, mandolin & vocals. The ROBERT ZIELINSKI TRIO draws inspiration from the deep reservoir of an older generation of west Ireland fiddlers. As a seventeen year old Zielinski travelled to Ireland and spent the next 14 years learning and immersing himself in the traditional music and in 2000 he won Ireland’s Michael Coleman Traditional Fiddler of the Year Award.

Together this trio plays a captivating set of tunes from Ireland, Scotland and the Shetland Isles including lively reels, jigs, strathspeys and hornpipes, as well traditional and contemporary songs, haunting slow airs and originals.

Supporting the ROBERT ZIELINSKI TRIO in the opening set is Fremantle’s own, BILLIE ROGERS, who describes her music as “soulful country”, but is so much more. Tantalisingly described as having evolved from a wallflower to a space-eater, Rogers is an exceptional singer and songwriter who can rightly be described as one of Fremantle’s best hidden treasures.
