Georgia Mulholland: It's Your Head That Bleeds

It's Your Head That Bleeds unfolds as both a printed book and sound installation, born from the first phase of the artist, Georgia Mulholland's, residency with Wonder Cabinet in Bethlehem, Palestine. In late 2024, Georgia engaged in a series of intimate interviews with her Palestinian friends in the West Bank, asking them to speak on their experiences in a moment defined by the ongoing echoes of 13 months of genocide.

The voices within the project are not just stories; they are living expressions of resilience, fear, hope and guilt - directly transcribed from those conversations. This work is an attempt to carry their voices across borders.

The sound installation, which plays on a continuous loop throughout the space, intertwines excerpts of the interviews with field recordings captured in the West Bank. The composition is punctuated by the omnipresent sounds of warplanes, sirens, and prayers. In contrast, the lively sounds of children playing, a family singing after a day of olive harvesting, and the soulful tones of traditional Levantine instruments also emerge.

All photographs in the exhibition were captured by Georgia Mulholland in the West Bank in late 2024, across Bethlehem, Hebron (Al-Khalil), Jerusalem (Al-Quds), Ramallah, Battir, Aida and Dheisheh Refugee Camps, and Mar Saba. The book component of this project was created in close collaboration with Bara’a Alaraj, Samar Abedrabo and Jeriah Lau. All proceeds from the exhibition directly impact the lives of Palestinian families in the West Bank and Gaza supported by Made in Palestine.

Portia Rose is a Boorloo (Perth) based soundscape artist who works with collected nature field recordings and live spoken word elements to create immersive sound tapestries and ASMR experiences. Portia has previously been included in programs such as PICA After Dark (2025), Fremantle Biennale (2024), the Blue Room Theatre's 'Summer Nights', the Rechabites 'Birdbath Projections', the Pickle District's After Dark Series and WAB Fest.

19:30 - Artist Talk with Georgia Mulholland and Honny Palayukan.

An honest conversation on the challenging and beautiful moments behind It's Your Head That Bleeds. The talk will include a live reading of the book, and a deep dive into the artist's experience creating in the face of occupation.

A passionate storyteller, Honny Palayukan is a film producer and curator with a soft spot for stories that focus on culture, community connection and humanitarian issues. While working across the philanthropic sector, she managed critical campaigns for the United Nations and TED which generated record breaking impressions across international press circuits. In recent years, Honny has applied her skills in producing TV Commercials and campaigns for the private and public sector and curated the 2024 CinefestOZ Short Film Program. She is the Founding Director of Sambal Films which aims to produce stories meaningful to Australia and South East Asia. She has extensive connections across Australia, Indonesia and Singapore and is currently developing projects with Infinite Studios, Visinema and Fremantle Indonesia.

This workshop will introduce you to the beauty of Palestinian embroidery and its rich cultural history. Palestinian embroidery, or Tatreez, is a symbol of resilience and identity, with designs reflecting the regions, traditions, and stories of Palestine.

In this workshop you'll hear from Samar Abedrabo, the founder of SAMARKAND, who will share insights into the deep cultural significance behind Tatreez designs. Based in Bethlehem, Samar will be joining this workshop digitally, with hands-on assistance from the Made in Palestine and team.

The workshop is designed for all levels. Whether you are a seasoned Tatreez-lover wanting to learn more about Samar's story and the history of Tatreez, or if you're a beginner. No prior experience is necessary, and hands-on assistance will be available. All materials will be provided, and you'll be able to take your piece home to continue your Tatreez practise.

About SAMARKAND

A cultural initiative dedicated to preserving traditional Palestinian embroidery. SAMARKAND offers beautifully embroidered T-shirts, Tatreez workshops, and research to protect this art form. SAMARKAND collaborates with both local and international artists on various projects, fostering a global appreciation and understanding of this rich cultural tradition.

Samar Abedrabo is a passionate advocate for human rights and cultural preservation, holding a BA in International Law and Human Rights from Bard College. Currently, she serves as a Coordinating and Administrative Assistant at Wonder Cabinet, a space for cultural and art production in Bethlehem. In addition, Samar works with Made in Palestine, a non-profit organisation dedicated to providing Palestinians with humanitarian and economic support. As the founder of SAMARKAND, a Tatreez initiative, she is dedicated to teaching and preserving the art of Palestinian embroidery, empowering beginners to connect with this rich cultural tradition.

Synopsis

When a nation-wide uprising breaks out in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, a young woman in Gaza must make a choice between love, family, and freedom. Undaunted, she embraces all three, joining a clandestine network of women in a movement that forces the world to recognize the Palestinian right to self-determination for the first time. Naila and the Uprising chronicles the remarkable journey of Naila Ayesh and a fierce community of women at the frontlines, whose stories weave through the most vibrant, nonviolent mobilization in Palestinian history - the First Intifada in the late 1980s.

While most images of the First Intifada paint an incomplete picture of stone-throwing young men front and center, this film tells the story that history overlooked – of an unbending, nonviolent women's movement at the head of Palestine's struggle for freedom.
