Each life is one song long, you’ll dance alone until it’s done.
Spin to your song as mirrorball javelins bore your bulk and essence.
The rhythm slows as you dance. You won’t outstep your song.
You can’t beat the mirrorball.
So keep dancing. It’s your favourite song and it’s playing just for you.
SILENT DISCO is a study on death and dying, and how we cope with the awareness of our own end. Unexistence and its prelude are conceptualised in figures of corporeal tension, suspended from unseen ceilings in mute assent. The first of a planned trilogy of exhibitions exploring our concepts of mortality, SILENT DISCO maps the first understanding of our own end that comes from recognising death happening around us.
In paintings and video installation Turisini describes the path in to the brilliant black of finality, inviting you to leave the comfort of the campfire and hot-step into the dark.
Don your flares. Come down to the dance floor.
Time to boogie.
Xavier Turisini’s signature visceral formalism is influenced by a rural upbringing with animal slaughter. When dressing carcasses, the secret colours and geometry of viscera under tension revealed an inspiring, unconventional beauty. His artistic motivation is a deep-seated drive to confront finality through his work, to challenge his own limited understanding of life and death, to parse out reality from the comforts of belief, and to shake the coping mechanisms of mortality and learn to accept his own inevitable end.
